The competition is divided into two categories. The first is more closely linked with industrial practice, with the theme aimed at either a product, or a group of products. Our goal however is not to limit the participants by the package production process, but to find new ways, new ideas and possibilities. The second category offers a different angle of looking at package, working freely with the package theme – the box.
Theme for the 2011 Product Package category: Package for a national product
In a strongly competitive environment, product packaging plays an important role. Its attractiveness and sales power are no longer determined only by properties and uniqueness of the product; often, it is the package that the customers go by. The competition category is not limited by existing products. The package should present new, original solutions and catch attention by its visionary design.
Out of the sea of same old ever-repeating products flooding the customers today, national products surface as islands reminiscent of the times when local affiliation was not an advantage, but a natural property of all products. Local specialities, regional delicacies, orginal objects… all these things contribute to the formation of national identity, and every country tries to use its unique fruits to create something to be proud of that will represent its culture and be seen around the world, bringing more tourists into the country.
Package your national product! Every country has its typical products and their packaging is a key not only to commercial success. Designer, more than ever before, represents his nation as well as himself. Become an ambassador of your country and create package for a national product which will highlight its uniqueness. The choice of the national product is up to You.
It does not mean that we expect packaging for maple syrup from Canada and spaghetti from Italy, everone is free to decide which product would today be considered national and which should represent his country on the international field. National product must be different from all the other common products and its origin must be evident at the first sight – it must stand out from the rest.
Competition entries will be accepted in two groups:
1) University students and young designers of up to 30 years of age
2) High-school students
The competition jury will mainly assess: innovativeness and creativity; package ergonomics; functionality; environmental aspects; shape, and originality of the idea; constructional imaginativeness; quality presentation. Participants will submit their entries in the form of a full-scale functional model. This means that it must be a functional mock-up; if it is designed to open, it must open. The model must be of high quality, with regard to potential representational and exhibition purposes.
Material used for competition work must be material that can be polygraphically processed and of the type used by the company Model Obaly, mainly a whole range of corrugated cardboard, smooth and mock-up board. Model Obaly company also uses polypropylene films, further printed and formed, and packaging made of a smooth cardboard. Designs combining both the cardboard and the polypropylene film shall be accepted for the competition. Model Obaly processes other types of paper and cardboard that may be used for competition entry. Detailed description of materials and their properties can be found here.

The theme in the category Different View for the year 2011: Book as a package for words
In this category all entries will be judged together: high school and university students, and young designers up to 30 years of age.
As modern industry is not based on the knowledge of one specialist, Young Package aims at interconnection of various fields. The category Different View is focused on creative artists and other experts who may enrich packaging industry and are interested in other than constructionalproblems. The point of this inspiring category is to always try to look at packaging design from a new point of view. The topics are assigned very freely and the same playful approach is also expected from other competitive works.
Information can be packaged, too! We wrap our ideas in words, words into sentences and sentences into coherent texts that get published in books. Wrap your message in a paper and let your ideas materialize.
The task of competitors is to create a book jacket or a book cover. The object of assessment will be the graphic design of book jacket or cover of the chosen book, however, the entry must be three-dimensional. We will assess the book jacket or cover not the book content, but at the first sight it should be evident that the content is processed. The competitors may enter their own designs of book jackets or covers. The book jackets already published or ready for publication will not be accepted into the competition. We will be glad if the competitors enter book jackets or covers especially made for the Young Package competition. We look forward to your exceptional, daring and also spatial designs.
The competition jury will mainly judge imaginativeness, inventiveness, creativity, originality solution, sense of humour, and quality presentation – both artistic and verbal. Submitted entries must be made well, with regard to potential representational and exhibition purposes.
Entries can be sent in any dimension, but in a free printed form. We recommend the language used to be English, Czech, or Slovak. The above listed materials are to be used.
