In the previous articles we described types of board, how they are categorized and produced. But the packaging industry doesn’t end the work by simply producing boards. Only at this moment it is possible to take the board and start creating boxes.
Before we start folding and bending we have to print, marouflage and cut the board. Today’s machines allow high quality printing as well as a whole range of other treatments - such manipulations are called finishing works.
In this phase of the process also skiving and grooving is concluded. Very mild lines are pressed into the cardboard, these allow better bending and folding. Thanks to these procedures the material doesn’t crack or rip when shaped.
One of the most important moments is the die-cut phase. In this phase the board gets its final shape. There are many ways of cutting-out board. We will mention only the main ones. Slottering is cutting the shape from the board thanks to rotating blades. This cutting uses a special machine called “slotter”. The most basic shapes are cut in such manner. The most complex shapes are gained thanks to die-cut forms and templates. One of the template advantages is the quick and easy manipulation.
After the cut phase gluing, seaming and bending becomes reality. Each package completion has to be perfect to ensure the aesthetic and functional qualities of the package. The final form is influenced by machines used and used material. In this phase all graphic and constructional flaws can be found and seen.
We recognize four basic types of packages:
1.straight-line box: box where only one gluing point is used. The glue is applied to box sides and than the etire box is completed.
2.crash-lock bottom: the box is glued and folded in such a manner that when you take it – it folds-out into a box
3.4-corner box: 4 - part box (four-point gluing recommended)
4.6-corner box: box with six different edges and six - point gluing (recommended).
Gluing large segments together is called marouflaging. It is mostly used when one isn’t able to produce top quality printing. So a better class paper is printed and then glued on a layer.
All the materials that are seamed (such as this one) provide better weight resistance. Seaming is just like gluing and can be added to the automatized process.
